mileage vs pace

Today sort of accidentally turned into a high mileage day.

I began my day with a 3.5 mile run. It became a bit “off”- I happened to run past my friends’ home, and one of them was working in the garage with the door open. So I stopped and chatted with him for a few minutes. Then he gave me a bag of peppers from his garden, so I finished my run carrying a plastic bag, which was a bit awkward. But I still finished in a respectable 60 minutes.

Then I went to the home of another couple, also friends. They had a baby recently and are adjusting to the new family member, so I have been picking up there adorable dog and taking her walking with me. She’s small, small enough that I’m not comfortable taking her on a hard run, but she’s full of energy and we have great walks and light runs together. After I came home and figured out how far I walked with her, I was surprised to discover that we’d walked/jogged 3.5 miles.

That means, total, I ran and walked a total of 7 miles today in a little over 2 hours. That is a significant increase in mileage but it’s left me exhausted!

I have a familiar soreness and tiredness in my legs tonight, even though I walked a LOT more than usual today. It’s a bit of an accidental discovery- but I think I am going to pull back on my effort a bit and focus more on mileage than pace.
